NEED HELP WITH WINTER WHEELS! Sign In

I have a 6-speed coupe quattro I bought last summer. Living in Wisconsin, I thought this car would be great in the snow with its AWD...boy was I wrong! Like another poster wrote..."this car handles like a paper boat in a hurricane.." I wanted to contact this guy about his solution....replacing the standard 17" with some cheap 16" steels and H-rated tires. Whoever this guy is cancelled his account - so I need your help! Can anyone recommend a brand/type of 16" rim that handles GREAT in the snow?? I'm having trouble finding something that will work well with a TT. PLEASE help..before the snow falls...or I may have to sell my baby. Thanks :)Frown

You really need to stay with wheel size and tire size that the car maker suggests. The real deal with traction is the tire itself. IMO and experience, traction ability drops off sharply after the first 1/3 of original tread is worn. Tires are rated A-B-C on the sidewall for expected traction - that when they are newer and if these are on the last legal part of the life they will stink in Winter driving, and not so great with just plain wet roads,

I would go with something that will grip the road. Bridgestone Blizzaks work really well with the wider, low-profile tires. Don't go with studded tires whatever you do, they are squirrelly and not as good at gripping.

Blizzaks are very soft ,they have tons of siping and act like suction cups on ice. They are really good in snow, too.

I think those would work best for you, I had them on a couple of cars I owned up north and I could go anywhere.
