1994 Pontiac Grand Prix SE, 3.1 V6, 176,000 miles Car idles fine but once shifted into Reverse or Drive it will bog down to the point the engine dies. The car will also stall when stopping at a stop sign or stop light. While driving, car will accelerate decently until reaching 45mph and then will barely accelerate at all. Car will also start to lose speed with gas pedal depressed and eventually stall out. I have changed spark plugs and wires, replaced fuel filter, changed oil and filter, checked air filter, checked fluid levels, ran fuel injector cleaner through car twice, new battery, and also had alternator tested. After all this work, the car still has these problems and I'm at my wit's end trying to figure out what's going on.

You can try to get a code reading for OBDI to see if there's some help there. Otherwise I'd check fuel pressure then check for exhaust restrictions among the first things to chase down, T

You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try eliminating any vacuum leaks and cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I'd be watching fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge when all of this is happening. Don't think an idle air control fault is going to cause loss of power on acceleration. FP should be around 40-47 psi. If fuel pressure checks out, unplug the MAF sensor and see if your symptoms disappear. Lower than normal MAF voltage output or flakey MAF can cause those symptoms also. Checking for exhaust restriction is another good idea if those things check out. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
