My tire feels like it's gonna come off! Sign In

I have a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am and about a week ago I noticed that my front left wheel was shaking when I drive and it's getting worse. Whether I'm going 10 miles an hour or 60 miles an hour it feels like it's going to come off. The steering wheel shakes and it makes a really loud thumping noise. The only time it stops making the noise is when I take my foot off the gas or hit the brakes but it never stops shaking. What could this be?

Well I'm not a mechanic by any means but first I would check the Tire it self to see if it has any problems then I would move to check rim and lug nuts, From there you could remove the wheel and I bielve that car came with. Strut front suspension with stabilizer bar independent with coil springs, according to a couple website I have looked for an check everything on that side of the wheel to see if there could be a problem. Anther way to diagnose the condition with the vehicle is to think back when it first started and how did it start. I hope this helps a little.

Nice answer slugmar. Look closely at the lugnuts to be sure they are tight. If they are OK, have you run over or into anything that may have bent the wheel? If not, jack vehicle up with the wheel bolted to car and move the wheel from top to bottom and side to side to see if you can fell any thumps. Usuallly if there is a thump from side to side, it is in the steering such as tie rod ends. If there is a thump from top to bottom it is suspension, such as ball joints. Then go to the braking system to be sure the rotor is not warped causing the shaking.
