<_< I let my sis borrow my car, while I drove my old truck to work, I come home to find out my car broke down on her, when me and a buddy who knows a little about cars, looked at it, he siad from what he could tell, it seems to be the timing belt <_< so how bad is this? I mean I know its bad, and it'll cost alot of money to fix, but how much, and how severe it is, IDK.

my car is a 1997 pontiac sunfire.

Which engine is in this? It may be a chain and may have jumped but chains don't usually just up and break as rubber belts can.

If (?) an intererrence engine and chain or belt broke there would be valve and or engine damage also.

Hey - hard to blame that on sis!

Link has info on this timing CHAIN not belt. I don't think this is an interferrence engine so if in fact this chain has jumped repair would be limited to the kit for it, and possible tensioner added with oil+antifreeze change at same time you could ask for a quote locally.

IMO - this style is fairly long lasting and complete breakage rare. You may have a cam or crank sensor problem or another issue with the car.

If you can get a code reading it would help pin this down. The only best way I know to check this type timing chain is to remove enough items to look at it or if you really think it has snapped turning engine while watching under rocker/valve cover would show no motion. You might get a peek thru oil fill cap - dunno,
