Hey guys my car has been messing with my head and wondering if anyone can help. Heres the info. Its a 1991 Honda Prelude Si 2.1 L with 175K miles. So the car has been acting up lately and I think I need a clutch but not really sure. It would be great to see what you guys think. Heres the rundown: -Car starts making a humming noise from what seems to be the trans. -Sound gets slightly louder over the course of three days. -Day four I start driving to work and shift... 1st, 2nd, 3rd. then come to a red light and put it in neutral at about the same time I hear a bang/ding/ kinda gear grind. It was only a half a second that I heard this sound. -Then I tried to put it in first gear (later any gear) and the car would not move despite the clutch pedal feeling normal and engine running normal as well. -Oddly enough the car would only actually move when it was in neutral and not any other gear, neutral felt like a very weak first gear. ...Later -at my house trying to test it out to see better what the problem is I tried to drive it again to no avail only smelling a burning rubber type smell. Kinda leading me to believe its the clutch. -After draining 4 oz of dirty trans fluid and then filling it back up with new stuff. Tried again, no go. ...and now the wierd part, -I had it towed the next day to my friends garage. I started it up in his driveway to move it into the garage and surprisingly it drove as it had a month ago. So we took it for a drive and every gear worked and there were no wierd noises and no smell either. So I ask you, what the hell is going on? I have the opportunity now to fix it but I don't want to be taking things apart that are irrelevant. PS... does anyone know where I can get a procedure on how to replace a clutch or trans if need be? I found a few links to the service manual but I was wondering if there are other things as well. The service manual doesn't seem to give me a full disassembly as it starts with "removing the boot from the clutch housing." I want to know from start to finish so I'm not taking bolts out that I don't need to. Ok thanks for your help in advance.

pmoney; Sounds as if something broke in the clutch. Possibly, a spring broke, fell out, of the clutch disc? On the disc, you'll notice six springs around the 'hub'. Sometimes, one of these will break and fall out. Just a thought. Loren SW Washington

Hey thanks Loren. Yea I was thinking that it was a clutch problem too but whats bothering me is that it drives normal. Do you think that if one of the springs goes that it can still drive normally? Ok thanks again.

Yes, it could. If the spring gets 'hung up' between the disc and pressure plate, it can cause your symptoms. Loren SW Washington
