post locked   My car died while in motion

I want to thank you ahead of time for all the help. I'm sure this site gets flooded with questions on a daily basis.

2009 Kia Rio LX 1.6l 160k miles

I had been back and forth in my car all day with no issues minus the hesitation when starting up the car. I have to keep the key turned a few extra seconds.

While driving, maybe 45mph, I lose all power but am able to roll into the shoulder.

I get a jump with no luck.

A friend comes to help and we both decide it's a bad battery.

Lights and radio work, but when I turn the key it won't turn over. No click sound. No crank sound. Just a... Whining like noise.

I buy a battery, install it, turn the key, and run into the same exact issue.

I had the car towed to my house and, well... That's pretty much it.

Tomorrow I'll be checking my alternator, but I am currently lost.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I will try and answer any follow up questions too.

Thanks.

? First, since it's at a house charge the new battery so you know it's fully charged.
You don't need a charging system from the car yet to get it to crank at least, start another thing.
So with this much info if jump didn't help nor new battery next is those junky "U" bolt battery cable ends right at battery AND don't forget positive goes on to starter, negative should go first to engine block and also to body metal. Any failure of either the show stops.
BTW, takes almost no power for radio, some lights but cranking the engine, take real power from a good battery well connected. One weak link in that is the best it could be for the whole car since it doesn't even click should be easier to find out why and right where but clean up all or replace things mandatory to be good.
Then you could check charging system may or may not be any issue at all?

You said you are getting a whirring noise. Are you sure the engine is not cranking with no compression.

Cranking means the starter is rotating the engine but it is not starting.

Smile! Hell yeah! That "whirr" type sound some items will do that if underpowered. You near certainty don't have enough power (that's AMPs) "delivered" to starter to even get single click or whack or near all can "flutter" if low AMPS!
By that if no clue is like a garden hose too thin to carry much water just dribbles it wont run a sprinkler no VOLUME OF PRESSURE is like what AMPs are electrically.
Off topic : "Glass half full type comment" -- I think like a Mazzhole (name of my location is derogatory for state of MA, it's not half full nor half empty you fool. It's just too dang big for what you needed! Out of the box thinking,

So I changed the battery terminals and gave it a small jump from my truck, but it changed nothing.

I did check my volts at standing and with my wife turning the key.

At standing I was at 12.5

When "started" it dropped down to 11.3.

Tom.. I'm not quite catching what you're throwing.

OK: IF that voltage drop (is a way to know it draws too much) is just that little with NO reaction it's not able to try to turn starter. It totally confuses it to measure voltages for info if the donor vehicle is still attached so void that for now if so.
Let's do something in between here: Try turning that engine by hand. Some you can tugging on accessory belt to alt, PS and things. If this can't turn AT ALL there's a wild problem nothing to do with battery you pulled over because of this.

Go on make it turn if no luck with belt go for the large bottom pulley (damper) one should have a bolt inside, turn that with a socket and breaker bar.
THIS MUST BE DONE WITH KEY OFF AND OUT OF THIS CAR! If you get a grip and can't turn it that's a nasty clue it's either hydro locked or engine seized up! Hydro lock would be fuel or coolant might stay locked could check by pulling all plugs and turn again by hand/breaker bar way it may cough yuk out.

This would have to be a dual problem as starter would still try if all normal with a noticeable "whack" just doesn't turn engine. If nothing it still may be loss of power from battery to starter and battery to ground. If normal and was locked tight volts would plummet if you had a live view while trying but no noise yet so turn engine first if this seized up need to know and go from there,

Ok... Found the problem.

It's a snapped timing belt.

My car is a doch which means a whole lot of stuff needs to be removed. He also suggested changing the water pump, but I'm not sure if I want to do that yet.

There also might be some damaged valves.

It's about 100.00 for the parts plus around 250.00 for labor and that's without changing out valves.

I'm afraid you're in for a lot more bad news.

If that timing belt broke you are going to be looking for another engine. That's an interference engine so the moment that belt broke the pistons hit the valves and bent nearly all of them.

Dude, don't tell me that... Really? Really... Dude. There's no way I'm going to drop a new engine into a 09 Rio...

This sucks.

This is the reason the manufacturer requires checking the belt every 30K.

I wouldn't waste my money replacing the belt. I'm sure the shop already knows this and wants to take your money to replace a belt that doesn't fix anything.

Oh no! Thanks Hammer and good luck Mijeelan :
This changes the game, pay attention despite too late and expect total problems now. Lesson - don't ignore suggestion of when to do or check what or this happens - bummer,

Talk about learning the hard way..

Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions. Not really the outcome I wanted, but hey, that's life, I suppose.

Besides, I've been leaning towards a new vehicle anyway and now I got my reason.

It sure helps make that decision! Sorry to waste any time up top just the events didn't suggest this trouble right away to me. Good luck and do know this has value (not much) for trade or salvage so something to get going in something else,

I had the same problem this morning with a 1973 GMC C3500. It started fine and I drove for about 12 miles and when I slowed down to make a turn, the engine cut out. I had no problem cranking the engine but it wouldn't idle. I could smell raw gas. I got the motor started, revved it a few times and then it would idle. I checked under the hood for a leaking mechanical fuel pump while the engine was running but didn't see anything. I drove another 30 miles stopping no problem.
Additionally, 2-3 times over the last year I've felt the engine lose power for a split second while cruising a freeway speeds.

I replaced the battery and positive cable last year. Replaced the alternator about two years ago. Rochester carb on 7.4L motor with GM HEI.

Do not hijack other peoples question.

If you need help with something, start a new question of your own.
