If it's an automatic transmission, try starting it in neutral.

Mr. Scotty was asking Automatic or Standard. If this doesn't crank at all it could be a neutral safety switch that has lost adjustment or a clutch switch that must have clutch pushed down or starter won't crank engine.

If cranking but not starting that's a different approach to isolate area of trouble so please be specific so we can help,

OK. Bit strange still so far. What noise or nothing when it doesn't crank? I'm still lost why moving an automatic makes any difference by moving it back and forth?

no noise at all. when i park it on decline position and remove my foot from break it move farward a few inches which normaly means it will start by it self next time but some times even that doesnt work.

WAG (wild azz guess) There's one wire smaller gauge at the starter that when given voltage by key should light a test light at least but bet when really staying in "no crank" situation doesn't get power. If you can get this such that it stays like that for testing that will help a lot.

This moving car, position up or down facing making a difference strongly suggests that wire has a problem along the way, frayed even unseen somewhere and probably underhood.

Find the right wire at starter. Follow it back and it no doubt goes into plastic wiring covering with other wires back to where it has power with starter requested (need helper) and if you get power on that wire along the way or find it pinched by prior work or just coincidence from new but took this long fix/splice it there. Bet is inside the insulation of the wire likely and wire may look good but be stretchy right at problem spot. If you do the dirty by piecing wire SEAL THE POKE HOLE! I really don't like poking wire insulation but it might be the only way so keep it if you try that to a minimum. Decent way is use a very sharp plain 12v test light and seal with liquid electrical tape sold even at hardware stores to seal up insulation. Moisture if allowed in will destroy the wire (over time) if not done well.

DO BE CAREFUL AS ENGINE MAY START UP WHILE TESTING - STAY AWAY FROM MOVING PARTS WITH YOUR BODY PARTS!

Other ideas anyone?

Tom

Maybe it's not the act of moving that makes it start but shifting it to neutral.

There is either a Dodge or Plymouth Neon with a SOCH or DOCH 2.0 for that year. They're all pretty much the same but it would be nice to know which one to look at a wiring diagram.

I agree that it sounds like a connection problem & the shifting weight is why it cranks.

Personally I would start at the relay. All 4 legs tie in there & obviously one is going south, knowing which one would really narrow the search....

If you wanted to try some blind luck stuff 1st, have someone hold the key in the start position and start wiggling harnesses (cafefully) until it cranks. Also since facing down hill seem to work the best, slightly jack the engine/trans assembly forward & try it but this still won't point out the exact area of the problem......

I would start at the relay with a power probe (It's in the PDC, it's the easiest to get to & I'm lazy......Sly)
