1988 Gmc S15 4wd 4.3L V6, Vehicle was running rough at anything but idle, preformed complete tune up Cap, Rotor, Plugs, Wires. Changed all Filters on the vehicle at this time also. This action made matters worse? checked Timing which is correct to engine decal label, 0 Degress BTDC (California vehicle). Thought was not getting enough exhaust exiting tail pipe, ran by the local muffler shop, they put it on a lift pounded on the convetor (sounded like loose sand) Had the convertor replaced along with o2 sensor. Drove it home now the muffler is so hot its melted the carpet in the rear passenger seat??? and yes the muffler is in the area where the carpet is melted not the Convertor? Sujestions. Oh to top this no Codes came up using my code finder from pep boys.

Have to admit thats a strange one...... Since the convertor came apart I would be tempted to change the muffler, never know how much junk got caught up in it......... Usually the cat is the 1st thing to overheat....... If the rest of the exhaust isn't overheating & the engine is in fuel control, there really isn't too much else it could be................ Pound on it & see what it sounds like.........

Considering that the converter is new; it should be relatively easy, to drop the extension pipe off the back of the converter. Take the truck for a road test and see if the running issues are gone.

As Dan D sujjested it can try disconnecting the muffler, before I do that, could you explain to me how to make sure the engine is in (Fuel Mode). Also how ( and I feel really dumb asking this) does one check the EGR system to see if it is working.

Bye the way thank you for your reply.

As far as fuel control goes you just want to make it's not running too rich or too lean. If your scanner has a data steam you can look at the fuel trims (probably called intergrator & block learn on that one) or make sure you are getting good crosscounts on the O2s.

I believe that is still using a vaccum EGR. To test that on you take off the vacuum line and apply vacuum from a pump the engine should idle down or die, if it doesn't then you have a plugged port or bad valve........

Dan has a good idea to drop the muffler, if the problem is gone & you like the way it sounds......problem solved...Wink
