I have an 2003 Chrysler, Town & Country van. 3.8 motor and 113K miles. It will not turn over or crank no nothing from the motor. I will wait and go back and some times it starts and then stalls. Noticed that when it is started up the Cruise light will pop on and off. If the cruise light stays on for more than 3 seconds the motor will bog down and then stall out. Tried the have the motor rev up when the cruise light comes on and it still stalls out, but the RPM cluster will stay where it was when it stalls. I have noticed that the fuel pump does not kick on when I try to start the van, but then when I hear the pump it starts. All the lights work and the liftgate and side door work so power is fine. The starter relay ticks. A bad fuel pump would not keep it from cranking. I have tried to start it in park and neutral and no go. Thinking that it might be a crank sensor or ignition or may be the Body Control Module. Just need a good place to start.

With all these different things happening; I would have the van scanned and see what codes are stored and where the codes take us.
When I say scanned; I don’t just mean the power-train controller, but all the different modules (computers). What I’m thinking is that something is triggering the anti theft but that doesn’t explain why the cruse light is doing goofy things?
Short of this full scan and retrieving all possible codes; we’re just poking around in the dark. With that being said let’s hope there are codes; too give us a direction to head in.
If there are no codes; then a manual check of power(s), ground(s) and sensor inputs will need to be performed.
Not a small task and should be performed by someone that is very familiar with all the different systems.
Vary easy to misdiagnose; which could be very costly; if the wrong controller is replaced or if a controller is replaced when the problem is a connection.

The van started this morning with a rough idle but then shortly stalled out and then would not crank. I left the key where it was and then the engine light and the check oil light and the air bag light came on. The van does not have a security alarm. I hooked up a hand held computer to the van and it said that there was no codes. Bummer. Was wondering if a bad key switch would keep it from starting but let all the accessories to work.

It goes from the key switch to the BCM then neutral switch then to the relays then the starter right? Trying to find what powers and grounds and sensors to check. Please let me know.

Also where does the fuel pump come into the loop? Cause when I hear the fuel pump the car will start then stall out. I know that a bad fuel pump will not keep it from cranking over.

If this was a basic code reader it will only read power train fault codes.
Have the system read by an actual proper scanner; that has the ability to access all of the different modules.
A 2003 Chrysler will have a factory anti theft system; that usually sits dormant until it sees something other then “normal” key ignition attempt at starting.
So if there is a fault in whatever system or the module thinks there’s something that isn’t normal; it can shut down fuel and starter operations.

Ok that helped alot. That answered why the fuel pump is not coming on and have noticed that the starter relay is not kicking on but all relays and fuses are ok. So the question is how to reset the anti-theft system. Any ideas.

There is no “reset” for the anti theft; that would defeat the reason for having the system. You have to fix the problem and then the anti theft will allow you to run the vehicle.
There are ways to by-pass the system but it has to be a properly functioning system, too defeat it; in a way allowing the vehicle to run.
I’m not going there, as in explaining how; but the auto/remote-start people do it all the time. They don’t tell people that this is what they have to do too make the auto-start work. Not good advertizing to let people know that any thief can now hot wire your vehicle. LOL

Re: Moter will not turn over and then stalls Sign In

I gave up the fight and took it to a mechanic. They said that it was a blown fuse. I went to pick up the van and it died in front of their service garage. The mechanics then pushed it back into the garage and 2 days later they call and said that it was a computer problem. It was going to cost me $500 for a remanufactured computer from the dealer. They do not sell new computers for my van only remanufactured and it would take me two weeks to send my old one off to get fixed though NAPA and Auto Zone at $400. I call every salvage yard around and no one had one. So I went on line looking for one and found a place that deals in car computers and for half price and with a one year warranty. Its called AutoComputerExchange.com and they said that every one sends them their computers to get them fixed. When I get my computer I will write back and tell how it goes. I service garage also said that they would install the other computer at no charge, since they misdiagnosed the problem. Smile

Yes, My van is still running great. The place where I bought the computer has a one year warranty with it. But be sure that it is not a relay or fuse also check the crank and cam shaft sensors first. Cause they do not do refunds. If need the web site for the computer it is link deleted......not allowed they are located in Florida. The cost is half price that the dealers wanted and only one week to get part instead of two. Hoped this helped. If I can help any please let me know.
