Hi everyone,
I know very little about cars. I try to take care of mine by taking it in for routine maintenance but when it starts making funny noises I'm at a loss...
So here's my situation: I was driving into work yesterday when I noticed a vibration as I approached 40mph. When I took it up to 50 the vibration turned to a violent shake. It felt like my wheel was about to fall off. It really scared the crap out of me. I pulled over twice to see if I could spot the problem, but I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. I figured it might have something to do with the weather (we just got 6" of snow -- I thought maybe something was frozen that shouldn't be. Again, not good with cars ;))
Anyway, the same thing happened on my drive home so I figured I'd drive to work today and call my mechanic (he's right around the corner from work). Just in case though, I took one last look around. This time I noticed that my front passenger side wheel is missing a lug nut. They're kind of recessed into the wheel so I didn't notice before.
I'm pretty sure this is the problem, but I just want to make sure. I know I need to replace the lug nut anyway, but should I still take it to the mechanic? Would that cause the shaking? Is it safe to drive home tonight?

FIRST... Check to make sure all other lug nuts are tight. Do not dirve it till you check. If others are tight then atleast you know the wheel won't fall off. I'd get it to the shop.
