My father replaced the battery and that didn't do the trick. In order to start it my parents would sit on the ignition for about 30 seconds until the engine got warm enough to start up. Naturally when I came back after a couple of years, the starter was completely burned out and I had to replace it for them. Now it is winter again and they are back in the routine of toasting the starter in order to get the car running in the morning. Any ideas on what the problem could be? I checked out the Intake Air Temp sensor and it seemed fine. I'd rather figure out what the real problem is than buy a new starter for it every few winters. DanD Veteran / Moderator Dec 17, 2007, 3:49 PM Post #2 of 4 (2547 views) Re: Mazda Protege cold starting Sign In I’m not all that familiar with Mazda; I just looked through the TSB”s that I have on this vehicle and there was nothing there to address this issue. I would maybe have a check of the engine coolant temperature sensor. Testing its resistance value at different temperatures. The only chart that I have gives a resistance value of 2200 –2800 Ohms at 68 Degree F or 290 – 400 Ohms at 176 Degree F. So The colder the temp the higher the resistance value of the sensor. If the resistance value doesn’t go any higher then, for example 1000 ohms the computer thinks the engine is still warm and wont add the extra fuel the engine needs to start, when it’s say 40 Degree weather? If all else fails stick a block heater in the engine and tell your parents to plug it in at night. LOL Sorry I don’t mean to make fun but at times when the gremlins won’t give up their secrets. It read 391 hot and 2500 cold. The 2500 was at a temp. I'm sure was lower than 68 degrees though, does that mean it was probably to low? If you were into this you could remove the sensor and place it in the fridge or freeze along with a thermometer. Testing the sensor at known different temperatures? If that seems extreme and for the cost of this sensor just replace it. Dan.
