MG Midget 76 Ignition timing Sign In

My 76 MG midget was in storage for 20 years. 1500, Electronic ignition. I have it on the road now. But I had a problem last weekend. When the car was at operating temp. and 80 degrees outside. It died out when I went to accelerate. I towed it to a "mechanic" who after 4 hours decided the problem was the timing was out. He adjusted the distributor and got it running again. But it happened again the next time I took it out. This time I adjusted it and got it home. I found the real problem was the vaccum advance plate was sticking as the car would heat up. Anyway that is now fixed. But I am trying to time it. The book says stroboscopic to be 2 degrees ATDC at 800rpm. When I set to this the engine quites. I am finding it to run at closer to 16 degrees BTDC at 1000rpm. So any one with knowledge about this I would appreciate some help. I am using an inductive strobe timing light. Thanks.

Not sure what to say other then too check valve timing; late valve timing will force you to advance ignition timing.
