Left front axle sitting out some leaking gear box oil Sign In

I have a 1997 volkswagen jetta 2.0... i recently bought it... after driving for a couple days i noticed an oil leak... i had a friend look at it and he said that it is gear box oil and it was leaking due to the left front axle not sitting in the gear box all the way.... my question is can i just pop it back in? what if that does not fix it?

It's going to need to be removed entirely and inspected to determine why that happened. The is a lock clip that should be holding it in that needs to be inspected.
