Knocking sound from car??

Can any one help? I have a Citroen Xsara T reg, 1.6i hatchback, and in the last few months has started making a knocking noise possibly from the rear of the car. You can always hear it when going over uneven roads, and almost driving in general. I did carry a bit of heavy equipment over a yr ago now, not sure if this may of effected the rear suspension?
If anyone can help on this matter I would appreciate it, and also have an idea of costs etc.

There's no way to even guess at costs till you know what's wrong.
Any moving suspension item is on the list to be checked. If this uses struts or shocks in the rear they will be on the likely list but all must be checked out. You might be able to see it with a helper jouncing the car while watching carefully,
