Jeep Tires labled temporary use only Question Sign In

Hi I wonder if anyone can give me some advice about some tires?

I have a 98 jeep wrangler that recently got 2 flat tires the tire place said they couldent be patched. Replaceing them was going to cost about $200. My mother told me of someone she worked with selling a set of 4 tires with the rims for about the same price. That sounded great and after checking that they were the right size and all she got them for me.

However when she brought them home I saw that they said Tempory use only do not drive over 50mph on the sides of all of them. I asked her about that and the person selling them had told her that they put that on the side because they had problems with people stealing the tires and the tempory use label kept them from being stolen and they were regular tires not spares.

I dont know if I should belive that or not.

I did some searching on google and found that the brand and model is one that has had recalls. So now I am really wondering about them.

They are Firestone Radial ATX P235/75R15

other numbers and letters on them 105M & M/S

They look like regular tires and not spares or doughnuts so I dont know what to belive. Any help?

Thanks in advance and sorry for being so long winded.

I have never heard of that.
If they have "Temporary use" on the sidewall, they are designed for just that ...IN MY OPINION..

I do not think Firestone could sell such a tire labeled that and then tell consumers that it's just to throw off the thieves..
I wouldn''t believe that for a second..
I have been in this business for many a year and thats a new one on me..sounds like he's scamming you..or he's gullible and believed it when someone else told him that.
Where did he get these tires? Steal them?

If your still in doubt, contact Firestone direct and chat with their Technical Dept...See what they say.
Heck, just call a local Firestone tire center and get their opinion as well.

Here is a number I found for Firestone...Hope its correct..1-800-367-3872...or try 1-800-356-4644..

Thats my opinion..See what the others may say

Good Luck to you!

Post back what you hear and decided to do...
We all will be curious!
Thanks

Jim

If its a sticker that says that then the person is probably telling the truth.....in all my dealings with tires I have never seen a p235/75R 15 made for temp use...only the ones that look like bicycle tires and I don't even trust them. The manufacture wouldn't sale a tire like that without the warning actually being made in the tire casing itself, but in all safety reasons I would make that call like Jim said.

Thanks for the replys guys.

Dave 284 - It is not a sticker it's in raised letters on the side just like the firestone name and other numbers. They really do look just like regular tires. They aren't any smaller or thiner.

Jim N - I will certanly give them a call tommrow and see what they can tell me.

I have done some more searching and if wikipeda is to be belived the M in 105M is the speed rateing. M means it's rated for a max of 81mph witch seems low to me.

Quote from wikipedia
"In many countries, the law requires that tires must be specified, and fitted, to exceed the maximum speed of the vehicle they are mounted on, with regards to their speed rating code (except for "Temporary Use" spare tyres)."

But I dont know if these came on another jeep or if they were just replacements.

Either way I am not going to drive on them till I know for shure.

Thanks again

?? A maybe with this?? I worked part time for a tire place when Firestone themselves recalled an entire line of tires that were already on 100s of new cars. I really don't know what happened to all those new tires? Bet anything they didn't just go to some dump. Are they just like other tires with treadwear ratings and so forth?

Perhaps they do make a temp tire now (substandard) for use with the ever growing fleet of AWD, traction controlled, ABS etc., vehicles that would go nuts with a donut spare even for temp use.

If they don't have.... Treadwear rating, Temperature rating and traction rating on the tire then they were not intended for passenger car prolonged use.

A call is in order to Firestone as mentioned. They all used to sell tires that were marked "blems" back when if the white wall or something didn't come out right and that mark was embossed into the rubber sidewall. Haven't even heard of that in ages now but they all did that back when as to no waste otherwise safe new tires,

Re: Jeep Tires labled temporary use only Question Sign In

Just got off the phone with firestone. They are not for regular use and the rep I talked to thought they were likely sold by some unscruplus dealer after the recall years ago just to move them out(I guess they wouldent get as much money by sendeng them back to firestone).

Now hopefully mom can get my money back Unsurelol

Thanks for the help guys I wouldent have even thought to call firestone. You all saved me a lot of trouble.
