Impala cruise control problems

I have a 2003 Chevrolet Impala LS with a 3.8L V6 engine. It has 98000 miles on it. We have had several electrical "gremlins" over the past couple of years and most seem to have been resolved. However, we are currently stumped with a cruise control issue that we would appreciate your help. When the cruise control is set , the cruise light is illuminated on the dash, however the cruise does not "take hold". We have taken this to our mechanic and he says we will have to take it to a dealer. We dont have a local dealer and this is going to be really inconvenient. Thanks in advance for your help.

You can check the basics, fuses, make sure the brk lights are working (the brk sw is tied into the cruise system) after that you are going to be looking at wiring diagrams & testing system componets. It doesn't have to be a dealer that works on it... If the shop you are going to doesn't get into that aspect of repairs, that's fine. It's better to pass on a job than get into one where you are over your head.
You can call around to the other shops in your area, maybe some that specialize in electrical work. They may be able to help you out
