The silver cover piece popped off the ignition key cylinder on my Explorer. Any ideas on how to get it back on?

That silver part is a permanent part of the cylinder switch, if its the part I'm thinking of. The whole switch has to be replaced.

Thanks for the reply. My switch is a little different. The silver cover piece fit into the cylinder. It looks like it should twist in somehow but I couldn't get it back in. I didn't see any type of clip ring to hold it in but that could be a possibility. See photos front and back attached.

Check with autozone, there are different outter silver parts on these cylinders but in all cases they are permantly made on the cylinder, and I think they are pressed on but not real sure of that.

?? different! Does everything work with that out? I might take a toothpick and some of that GooP brand glue and stick it back in - I'd bet originally is was pressed into place/crimped - dunno for sure........

I think you may be right about it having been pressed in. I can line everything up right but can't seem to get it to lock back in place. If I have to buy a new cylinder maybe I'll try a little persuasion first! The ignition works fine without this piece but it makes it very difficult to remove the key. I've been sliding the key over the piece and then inserting the key into the cylinder. It's just a pain when the key is removed and the piece goes flying under the seat.

I suspected it still worked but the turning force is possibly all on the key itself without that snug in place and the key might just up and break off! Just chance - I've never seen one do just exactly what that has done

I think they call that material, "the silver piece"......Monkey metal, the same stuff elcheap-o tools are made with.
