I have a 94 Mercury Topaz. The car is idling so fast that I have difficulty coming to a stop. It is idling at between 2000 and 3000 RPM. It used to idle at just under 1000 RPM before a mechanic replace one of the vacuum hoses. It is maintaining this idling speed and will not drop back down to around 1000 RPM. If I press the accelerator it get worst without dropping back. Could the problem be some type of sensor problem?

If this happened right after the vacuum line was replaced why aren't you going back there to see what happened?

take your car to a good mechanic and have him check the vacumn hose connections. it sounds like you have a vac hose loose or not connected correctly, causing an erroneous vac signal. the easy solution is, if you have the knowledge, is to back off on the carb adjusting screw/throttle adjusting screw on the throttle linkage on FI engines. another possibility is that your engine might have been timed with the vac hose off the distributor and not replaced after timing and someone working on your engine hooked up all vac hoses correctly in finalizing their work causing an increased idle.
