Idle Problems in 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GT? Sign In

Hello,
I have a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GT, Engine 3.8 Ltrs V6, 125,000 miles. I noticed that over the past few weeks my car has been making a humming sound. At first the noise was slight, and not that loud. Along with this humming sound, I also noticed that the car was idling at around 700-800 rpms. I also noticed that while at rest made a gargling sound. A few days ago, the humming sound became extremely loud and persistent. After looking under the hood the humming noise seemed to be coming from the fan belt. I tried using some fan belt conditioner but the noise persisted. The idle also rose to about 1000 rpms. The vehicle was in this state for two days. Then, this morning as I was driving the vehicle started cutting off while I was driving. Once I made it home I attempted to start it again and it didn't start. My father said he believed it was an idle sensor, but he's not a mechanic so he said he's not 100% sure. I would like you guys feedback, it would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Avoid using the product called belt dressing as most make noise if nothing is wrong!

With the noise try starting it and looking at the belt for being in a perfect plane. I'm interested that the harmonic balancer is in line with other pulleys.

In that is both makes noise and now not starting suggests the belt or the alternator is in question and now battery should be charged with a charger, even tested if you wish. With the noise and no start, you should take belt off or at least off enough to not touch if the one that needs motor mount disconnected and spin pulleys one by one. Good bearings are near silent,

If im not mistaken a 1999 pontiac grand prix has electric fans. So i assum you are talking about the serpentine belt. You said you noticed a gargling sound. My guess would be a water pump issue. As far as the car cutting out then not starting again, I would say you over heated it. Probaly got a head issue now.

I had the same problem with my 98 GTP and it turnrd out to be the altenator bearing altough it was still charging, take the tension off the pulleys and check to see how easily the ideler and alt pulleys till you find a tight one.
