I put new brake pads on without turning the rotors Sign In

I just put new brake pads on yesterday and one of the rotors was scored a little bit. I was in a friends garage and he was pushed for time, so we just put the new pads on and left it, without turning it. I put really cheap pads on it, so the life of them won't be extremely long anyway, but how bad is it to put new pads on rotors like that. I figure it will probably just shorten the life of them slightly, but I don't know how bad. Thanks for your help.

That is dependant upon how deep the grooves are and your driving style. The harder you drive and the deeper the groove, the ashorter the life of the pad. We have installed pads over old roters before and not really have any adverse effects. Usually you will feel the pedal pulsation a lot earlier than if the rotors are new or turned.

+1 not good practice, but not the end of the world either.
