I need to reburbish van...where do I start? Sign In

Hello Everyone,

I have a 1991 caravan cargo van with 110,000 miles that I use for my business. Last fall I had planned on replacing it with a newer used van. After going to several dealerships I was shocked to find the average mileage on used cargo vans was between 90,000 and 150,000 with an average price tag between $7,500 – $9,900.

To make a long story short, I decided I was far better off to refurbish my current van than to buy any of the junk that I saw on the lots.

Where do I start? What maintenance should I have done?

Here are some of the existing problems:
A/C is not working.
Temp gauge sensor not working
Speedometer sensor intermediate.
Fuel gauge sensor intermediate.

Outside of these problems, the van runs fine. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Paul

well if those items are truely the only items that need attention... meaning it doesnt need engine/trans/suspension overhaul or body work.

they are relatively minor tasks in an "Overhaul" of a car....i would try to tackle them all in one weekend as to not tie up the vehicle more then need be.

besides the A/C to me it seems like all your gauge issues are somehow related.

due to the age....ill gaurentee that there is a leak somewhere in your A/C and youve lost all your freon. take it to a shop and they will fill the system with a UV light dye and youll find your leak.

fix and refill system
