MadOh My....i sure hope someone can help. When my daughter shifted my MANUAL Olds Cierra wagon (1994) into gear (on the column) the handle broke off. We were able, after some panicked phones calls able to find the transmission linkage under the hood to shift it manually.......NOW WHAT?

I would be sooooo gratefull for any advice you can give this poor single mom of TWO teenage girls

THANKS in advance

Did it break off like a pencil breaking, or did it separate from the column?

The shifter is held in with a pin through the column where the handle goes into the column. Use a hammer and punch to remove this pin; after that the shifter will or should just pull out.
Go to your local auto wreckers (salvage yard) they should have a replacement handle.
If nothing else is broken inside the column; it should only take you about 10 minutes to replace the thing.

GREAT PIC/DIAGRAM DAN!

girlnextdoor - If the pin is missing in what's called the "shift bowl" in that diagram it may have worn in too large to hold a replacement pin. To replace that collar (shift bowl) requires removal of the steering wheel - not a DIY job but you could fake it for a while if both holes are there with a bolt or some creation till it can be fixed properly or better to last.

This used to be common on the "three-on-the-tree" standard shift cars/trucks and others and the "roll" pin would fall out and even a stubby screwdriver would get it home to fix better. Those pins "punch" out - not threaded but "knurled" and or sprung to fit tight.

I don't think this is so common that used will be a problem for any of it. "You go girl" - good luck!

T
