Hyundai Santa Fe - Gearbox Repair Sign In

Hi, we are looking for some advice re gearbox repair and what could have caused this to happen. Our Santa Fe is 2001 Y reg and we bought it from a Hyundai dealer a year ago. In that year it has been back to the dealer 8 times with various problems including stearing rack to be changed and various other problems but they were always repaired as the car was under warranty. 2 weeks ago we took it back in as the engine management light came on and there was the smell of fumes in the car but they said the electrics had been reset, the light went off and everything seemed fine. A week later it was serviced at a different garage but last week the engine seized up while driving it and it was towed to the garage we bought it from. Yesterday they said it was probably the timing belt that had caused the problem but today they said it was the gearbox and it would cost £3300 to be replaced. i asked what could have caused the problem but they said the car would have to be totally stripped down to find out the cause and they would charge extra to do this. How do they know this is the only problem and not the result of something else if its not been stripped down?. Also is it something that would normally happen in a car of this age as its only done 65,000 miles? Also, could the timing belt if broken or damaged cause the gearbox to pack up and is it something that should have been picked up in the service?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

£3300 - ouch!! thats some pounds! What the heck happened? Yes - timing belts can break and destroy valves, pistons or even wipe out an engine but these cars in USA came with 100k mile warranties and strick demands that maintenance be followed to the letter. A timing belt replacement would be around the miles you said you have but I don't understand the big deal in knowing better what's wrong with this - not while suggesting that much money! Isn't that about $6,600 US?
