I drive a 1999 Chevy Malibu. My power steering went out, and I've been told that both hoses and the pump need replaced. Unfortunately, I don't have the $600 it will cost to have the mechanic do it. Is this something that would be at all feasible for me to do myself? I don't have a ton of car repair experience, although I did replace my radiator hoses last year. I don't know if this is something that will require any specialized tools, or whether it can be done with the basic set (screwdrivers, pliers, etc) that I could bum off a friend.

This doesn't sound like a job for you. Done incorrectly, you could create a lot more damage than you already have. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

? Who told you BOTH hoses and the pump? Possible and does require a puller if a new pump is used. Return hose is usually dirt cheap and pressure hose unknown to me right now or the pump. Still it probably requires a couple tools most non aggressive DIYers would have. As HT said - don't think this is for you and perhaps another opinion and a better price. NO I don't think replacing cooling system hoses had anything to do with causing this problem, T
