Honda Civic 2001 Catalytic Coverter Question	Sign In

I have an 8 year old civic that runs perfectly. Today the catalytic coverter COVER rusted through and fell off. I plan on having the car for a minimum of two more years. I live in the northeast, so its cold and wet. Should I get it fixed?

If it is just the heat shield that fell off? The heat shield is there to keep you from starting a fire when parked over tinder-dry material. The catalytic converter gets VERY hot. Don't think that's an issue, at least at this time of year.

Actually, it would be a good ice melter where I'm at.

As Loren said they do make a lot of heat which is why shield is there. If you still have the parts the broke they can be put back on effectively. Some you lose just the bottom one which is bad enough, but it that is also part of holding the top shield to underside of the car it's VERY important to repair it.

Check - I'm not sure if some aftermarket kits are available for a decent replacement - they should be because the alternative can mean a whole new pipe that included this and the converter - monster bucks for such a cheap thing really!

Folks in the rust belts: Try to tend to these when they just make annoying noise and save the parts as said IMO they can be refastened safely,

Good point! I didn't think of the upper shield. Had a Ford catch the carpeting on fire from the cat overheating.
