Honda Accord questions! Sign In

Hello Everyone,

I'm hoping someone can give me some advice on something I know very little about.
For reasons too boring to get into, a man that has moved from the UK back to Poland has offered me his 1995 Honda Accord absolutlely free. Seeing as my 95 Escort is on it's last legs I thought "Fantastic"!

However, and there's always a however isn't there, he left his car in the yard of the place he used to work back in July and the MOT has run out. Not taxed either and there is quite a bit of damage to one of the headlights and bumper, one of the reasons he can't be bothered with it I'm told. Apparently, asside from the damage to the headlights and bumper, the car is absolutely tip-top. I've been told it'll cost about £200'ish to repair that, which is considerably cheaper than buying another car that may turn out to be just as unreliable as my current Escort.

I went to see it yesterday, and there is a yellow sticker from Plymouth city council saying that the vehicle has been abandoned and under the refuse disposal act it will be collected and disposed of. The sticker also says that the only person who can object to this is the occupier of the land, the tennant or licensee or anyone who has legal possession and control of the land.

What can I do here? I can't drive it to my home and keep it on the driveway until a time that the headlight can be repaired because there is no tax or MOT, if I try to risk it and the Police see the state of the headlight they'll definitely pull me over and then obviously they'll discover it shouldn't be on the road at the moment. I think this leaves towing it as my only option, but then what about the Refuse disposal sticker? Can I be prosecuted or fined for removing it without telling anyone, technically the car is still his so would that be seen as theft?

I've never seen one of these Refuse Disposal stickers before so I have absolutlely no idea how it works. Can someone please advise me of how to proceed here and if theres a better way to get car out of where it is and onto my private property without risking a £1000 fine and 3 year ban!

Any help will be appreciated, Thanks in advance,

Dan.

Without having a clue about your local laws and rules if you have documentation that you own it now you should talk to the city council you mentioned to get the car and perhaps the owner or tennant of the property where it was left.

If it's undriveable as is then what is the problem with towing it?
