High pitched whistle whilst driving Sign In

Ive got an 02 citreon C3, 30,000 miles. over the past month or so its developed a high pitch whistling noise whilst im driving. It whistles at any speed; 70 to 5mph

1) starting from cold is OK, no noise fine, but its when im about 15miles into my journey that the whistling starts.

2) When i apply the brake the whistling stops completly

3) It whistles whilst i drive straight. If i turn a 90 degree corner the whistling stops for that. If im on a gentle left turn it is quiet, and if its a right turn it whistles (although up until a few days ago the noise/ quietness with the R and L were swapped over)

Any ideas as to whats causing it?

Re: High pitched whistle whilst driving Sign In

By your description and the miles you should be due for at least front brake replacement. Many cars will put a noise maker on the brake pads that when worn to that level is a warning to replace them. Oddly the sensor that makes this noise will shut up when brakes are applied and be noisy when not in use or steering like you mentioned.

They should be checked even if they have been done already as that is most likely,

Re: High pitched whistle whilst driving Sign In

The noisemaker is often a tab of metal which rubs against the rotor when the pad has been worn too far. I drove my jeep in this condition years ago and waited too long to have it checked. Eventually it started gouging the rotors and causing the whole front end to shake and rattle when I would brake. Required replacement of rotors and pads which is much more expensive.
