Help with 4x4

Help with 4x4 Sign In

92 gmc sonoma

When I went to put her up on the ramps one of the wheels started spinning. So I put it into 4x4 mode with the stick lever and it did the same thing.
How can I tell if the 4x4 is engaging. Also this truck has been sitting for a while and probably has not been put into 4x4 mode for some time. Any idea's or suggestions?

?? If differentiated only only wheel would spin at a time. On the ground both work till one slips,

There are different types of ways 4X4 works. I can't tell how you were checking. There should be an indicator light which is usually correct if engaged. AWD may not use front wheels much or at all untill you are really slipping.

If you saw one spin it's probably fine. I don't know what you have available for testing. Take it to where it would demonstate it works like pebbles or soft sand if no ice and snow are available as it isn't here now OR put back wheel up on rollers and the front on ground should move the vehicle.

Regular differentials send power to the easiest wheel and limited slip would have both getting power. Regular diffs will spin the opposite wheel the opposite direction is all are lifted and limited slip they'll spin the same direction when hoisted and done by hand.

Perhaps hoist all wheels - try tapping on brake and watch if it will switch which wheel spins.

Just make sure you test safely as it could take off on you is any wheels are on ground!

I don't know your exact set up as said. Check the owner's manual and find pebble lot or someplace as said and take off with someone watching - if one front wheel works and one back you are all set.

I plow snow with a GM 4X4. It will happily spin just one front and one back if it's slipping. If wheels aren't spinning you are getting help from all four on they type I have such that on dry or plain wet surface it feel real funky when turning as the front doesn't differentiate the same as the rear only....
