Help needed fast fast for my car Sign In

I have a 1990 old calais with a 2.5 4 banger in it, it's my winter bomb for the last 2 winters. I went friday and had the emissions test done to re new the plates. The guy doing the test said the car passed better then most newer cars. Anyways I left there and drove 3-4 miles and then it started missing and acting strange. I thought maybe there was some water in the fuel freezing it up so I poured in a container of gas line antifreeze and added 10 bucks worth of high grade gas. I babied it home. when it's in parked you can mash the gas to the floor with no problems but when you put it in gear and put a load on it it starts missing and back firing thru the top of the engine. I thought maybe a plug or wire went for a crap so I put new plugs and wires on the car and the same thing. What could be wrong??

Re: Help needed fast fast for my car Sign In

if memory serves me correctly (and out of all the things i lost its my mind i miss the most) the 2.5 doesn't have a chain or belt......its gear to gear driven...
just some thoughts.....does it have dis (distributorless ignition) or a distributor???can't remember...i think its dis....check the coil or coils...try to isolate which cylinder is misfiring..if dis and you know which cylinder it is,switch the coils if problem moves then its the coil...seen coils break up under a load....possibly a module problem also..
hope i helped.......Unimpressed

just thinkin' here also....hmmmm..if its backfiring thru the top of the engine,(popping????) could be a valve problem (intake valve)....check the compression on the cylinders.......how many miles are on the engine?....
just a thought.......Wink

I would not be the belt or it would not even run at all. I'm thinking fuel. What do you guys think. This motor has the coil pack on the back of the engine. pain in the ass to get at.

Timing anything - belt, chain, or even a crank sensor could still run. I've done several timing chains that just "jumped" a tooth or two and did just what you are describing. True - more often than not they won't run at all.

If I recall that engine the coil pack on the back is a PITA but you can get to it from underneath if you want to go there,

I have a 91 Chevrolet that did the same thing! I used carb/Fuel injector spray and took out my fuel injector located on the top of throttle body(screwed down with torgue screw) and sprayed it out throughly. Worked for 6 more months until I broke down and bought a new fuel injector at Advance Auto or NAPA auto parts. cost $85.00 But well worth it. Maybe this is your problem?

Re: Help needed fast fast for my car Sign In

Worth a try. I was thinking a spark problem because of the backfire and not knowing what was done with a smog test,
