Trying to get the starter out of a 92 Dodge Dakota with 3.9 V-6. Are There more than 2 nuts holding it on? How do you get to the top nut to begin with? I am so discouraged working on any thing built since the 70s, replacing a starter used to be so easy.

Go to the auto parts store and pick up a long 3/8" drive extension bar and a 3/8" drive universal joint. You may also want to pick up some deep sockets. If your starter has the 3- bolt flange then you will have to use the u-joint to get to the top nut. As for the length of the extension bar, get one at least 18 inches long. Also, a flex head ratchet helps dramatically to get into tight places. You may want to try to go over the back of the starter with the joint and extension and pivot the ratchet to get on the nut. Hope this helps. P.S. Look at the new starter and see how many holes are in it. Some Mitsubishi starters use a 3- hole flange and yes, trying to get to the center one can be a challenge. Steve

Technical difficulties? We got the "in reply to" part of the post but nothing else more. Maybe you can hit back and post again. Steve
