Help! Used Truck Sign In

Bid on a 1994 Chevy 1/2 ton Vortec 4.3L V6. Truck was a college campus work truck, only 60,000 miles, got for a measly 600$. Unfortunately it sat for 8 or so months, on my way home it ruptured a rear brake line that was all rusted out. Does anyone have advice on what to do to,to get this truck back in tip top shape after sitting forever unused and undriven. What are typical problems that occur from vehicle sitting idle for so long beside the obvious brake line issue. With such low mileage I intend to get alot of life out of this truck but I need to know what issues I should be tackling to get it back in running order. Motor and tranny seem strong but I know you experienced mechanics Know what to look for first with a vehicle that sat idle for so long. Please help, any advice is very appreciated. I am a heating/air install and service tech with an industrial backround who's not afraid to wrench on things, just need some friendly advice.

Re: Help! Used Truck Sign In

Hi,

Change oil asap - grease front end. Drive out fuel when brakes fixed and add solvent and new filter.

Brake line rust out: That tells me where you stand with it rust wise overall. Expect to do more than the one spot that leaked - cheap for lines but can be a lot of work. Look at all areas and replace now. May consider turning or replacing brakes drums + rotors as rust seems to be an issue and they'll shake if it sat. Plain check out brakes for rust problems in general including parking brake operation - careful - it might stick and be an immediate project.

I'd give it a good once over for all fluids, belt, hoses, trans fluid change, coolant flush and renew, check tune-up items.

Drive it and other things if needed will make themselves known,

T
