Help!!! lug not issue

i have a 1996 dodge stratus 2.4L its FWD and the lug nut wont come OFF i need help i think I've stripped it a little bit trying to get it but I can use the next smallest size on the tire iron but after that nuttin smaller seems solid and no clue why its doing this I need IDEALS to get it off without destroying any thing. (PLEASE HELP)

Is this the type of lug nut that has a chrome "cap" on it? You may have to end up breaking the "cap" off, then get the appropriate size socket to fit the actual lug nut.

Is this just "rounding" up but lug nut still there intact? Don't waste it too much while there's still metal to grab if so.
If you have an assortment of SAE and Metric impact, six point sockets one should be real close but won't quite go over the rounded hex. Choose carefully which is closest but tight and hammer it on tight and it should remove or at least have the decency to break off so you can replace the stud.
They sell funky looking "nut" extractors for lug nuts that are spiralled to continue to tighten up on a rounded lug nut as it's turned - haven't use those myself as the "close" socket and hammer has worked for me every time so far.......

Ps: If you are dealing with lug nuts with the chrome covers over the real nut - get rid of all of those for one peice ones and end this problem for the rest

it looks to be solid to me i went to do a tire rotation today and all the lug nuts came off except one for some odd reason its really tight seems to me like impact tight but all the others wasn't as hard as this one ive sprayed wd-40 in it to try and loosen it but it didn't seem to help would u no of any other ways to get it off besides an impact (don't have one) we usually use a 4 way tire iron and that works but its just that one.

Dazed; You may want to put the other lug nuts back on, then take it to a shop that can use an impact gun on it. The "hammering" effect of the impact will usually get it off. Straight brute force will probably break the stud, which may happen, anyway. I've had several people come in with the same problem. We'll loosen it for them, then retighten to appropriate torque.

ok well my neighbors have an impact gun would any impact gun work and then juss tighten it up with an tire iron work we were thinking about that but we were goig to get a new lug nut so we don't run into the same problem again

"If" the impact gun is "strong" enough. Most of the electrical ones aren't too hefty when it comes to torque. But, is absolutely worth trying. The worst that can happen is breaking the stud, which is easily replaced.

its air compressed so it should have power rite but what are the chances of the stud breaking ( I drive this car to school & work) how much time would it cost to repair and the price

If the lug nut was overtightened to begin with, it may have "pulled" the threads on the stud, or if it was "cross threaded". Either way, it's a 50/50 gamble. It is usually no big deal to replace the stud if it does break. Your vehicle should have five lugnuts. You can (and I'm not advocating doing this) drive with just four lugnuts to your local shop or dealer to have the stud replaced if you can't do it yourself. Most 'tire' shops can do this, too. The stud will cost you a couple of bucks, and in the neighborhood of an hours worth of labor. Maybe, less.

ok so its a gamble but would 4 studs be ok if i drove to work and school till i got time to take it in and have it replaced which is all in town work school and a couple of shops too (wondering if its ok to drive like this till i had time) if it breakes

Oh, boy. Professionally, I would have to answer that, Yes, have it replaced immediately. With that said, if all the others tighten okay, .......

Well, it's not fun to do, but you can take a flat chisel and try and split the nut. If you have alloy wheels it'll be a real chore and have to be extra careful as to not damage the wheel. If your neighbor has an air/impact chisel, that would be one choice of tools. As someone else mentioned, there are special sockets that are designed to 'grab' the rounded nut and remove it. The sockets aren't cheap, but work very well. I bought mine from Snap-On, but I'm sure that there are other sources.

Gosh, I don't know how to describe it. Looks like a regular impact socket, but has a twist on the inside that 'grabs' the nut in counter-clockwise operation. I bought mine as a set, was rather expensive. Don't know if you can buy them individually. Ask some of the local shops. Maybe, they have a Snap On or Mac dealer that comes by once a week or a phone number that you could call for one. Wouldn't cost to ask Auto Zone, NAPA, or CarQuest.

dazed: Look at the pics of those tools. Whether there's some cheap cover over a rounded nut or not seem NOT the issue anymore. It matters that there's anything left to grab and those sockets can grab just about ROUND nuts if there's still enough left. Those can then be shaken off with good air wrench or by "flex" handle but as already said the air tool is LESS likely to break stuff.
Exact wheel styles are hard for me/us all to know just what you have left to work with. When I said "hammer" on a just a bit too small socket over the rounded nut it really is doing about what these special sockets do. Sometimes you waste a socket do such. You can end up wasting wheels, hubs over this too.
A shop should be able to help you out with this - then replace ALL lug nuts with better ones.
Autozone by name does carry those socket shown by way2old and Loren - at least one near me. Can't recall if a set of them or one by one??
There would be different approaches depending on what type of wheel, and just what's left there to grab now. Those sockets should do the trick. Whether to use air or a flex bar is a "feel" you get when you've been there a few times. One may work better than the other. Air too fast may make the rounded nut left so small it will be worse??

turns out it was a metal capped lug nut i thought id make sure i took a flat screwdriver and a hammer taped lightly in the cent and it went right through i broke most of it off i can see the lug nut its really rusted but wat eles do i do to get the rest off please help

If this was a 3/4 lug nut to begin with it will be about 18mm without the shell. A SIX point socket - air will be less apt to break it as we've already said and go for it,

well finally its done with we got the lug nut off but it required a lot more the bolt didn't hold it stripped so we chiseled it with an air chisel and hand chisel and then finally after we couldn't get it to crack we took a plasma cutter to it and rosted the bolt and nut to nuttin but half of the bolt and 1/4 of the nut left well we got it off and thanks for all the help
