Hammering Sound???

 My car (2002 Mazda Protege) has recently begun making a hammering type sound as a shift and accelerate. The sound mainly occurs in 1st thru 3rd gears, but occassionally it will happen in 4th gear; I have yet to notice it when I'm in 5th gear. The sound seems to get louder and faster the quicker I accelerate. What could be causing this? Any suggestions of what to do??? Thanks for you help

This is strange noises week I guess! Bet you have a bad CV joint and the usual repair is the whole half shaft. It's more common that they make crackling sounds especially when accellerating with wheels turned hard but impossible to say for sure, T
