HELP 1999 chevy silverado wont stay running Sign In

Ok 2 months ago jump in truck (1999 chevy Silverado 6L) pull out drive and start up hill spits and sputters like it is going to die, everytime I try and accelerate it bogs down worse, tell my dad Its acting like I got bad gas, too much gas or not enough! His fix fuel injection cleaner! over the next month one day she runs like a champ next day same ole! seemed to be worse in cold weather or sometimes acted better the longer u drove it!

Next check engine light comes on and goes off over this month of madness somedays I couldnt accelerate of 65 somedays over 35! go to advanced auto parts and auto zone same 2 codes come up: throttle postion sensor and Crank shaft sensor. they advise me only change one and see how it runs purchase the part call my dad and tell him and then she runs like a champ for 2 days so we wait to change part plus the check engine light went out!

get up on a colder morning stop and fill the tank yep 30+ gallons drive 4miles she starts spiting and sputtering and dies at a intersection and the battery light and check or low oil pressure light comes on! get it started enough to get it off the road and dies again, continue to try and start, it will start a few seconds idle a second but give it gas and she dies!

Change the throttle postion sensor on the side of the road start for a second and dies. I have it towed home, run up and buy the crankshaft sensor now it wont start at all! dad says to open gas cap turn key on listen for fuel pump nothing. Spray starting fluild in it starts but dies. So my dad comes and tows it to his house drops the tank and changes the fuel pump. Calls me today it starts idles a second and dies!!!!!!

so needless to say after a 40.00 sensor a 70.00 sensor a 80.00 tow and a 400.00 fuel pump theres nothing priceless about this moment except for the thought of me wanting to set the truck on fire and push it over a cliff!Tongue

So If anyone has any input because we have exhausted all options I cant afford to have it towed or even looked at now by someone and am still without a Truck!

Thanks Pam

Pam - I feel your pain. For now forget the code readings from chain parts stores. It's nice of them to do that for free most of the time but they are there to sell parts. This by your well done description lacks fuel/fuel delivery the reason to be found but a pressure test on fuel rail would be really helpful.

Once you didn't heat it prime up at all even if pressure too low and of course it wouldn't run/start like that but momentarily fired up when primed - a ha! Now the question why? If it does now with new fuel pump it may have had a fault but the aftermarket pumps have proven to have high failure rates out of the box! Nice.

I'm trying to think a ONE common reason for all this at once and not much comes to mind.

Notes: I didn't see a fuel filter on your list? That shouldn't stop it from priming up but should be done on a routing basis. Don't expect "fuel system cleaners" to solve a problem but I do think the better ones used sparingly and periodically can help prevent a problem. Not much out there is a fix in a can and depending can just make things worse.

This truck and other vehicles do have issues with connections and a few I lost hair over were just intermittent, sometimes working relays that just didn't pass the proper current thru them to whatevers and testing was futile as they could just behave for a test so have just tossed them and voila - back in biz.

This isn't being intermittent on you right now so needs to be nailed down and I hear you that you just spent some bucks. Hope you have transportation to build up some more funds for this and suggest professional diagnosis which most likely would save you in the long run.

Late for what has already happened but get into a motor club that includes reasonable towing distance. Locally anyway AAA has been excellent and pays for itself with assorted discounts never mind towing.

Back to fuel delivery. These (most) are VERY fussy about fuel pressure that can both hold and keep up with loads when it needs more.

See what the others here have to suggest of course. So far I think a better code reading and interpretation of it will lead to the answer and it doesn't help that you are stuck right now,

T

I've seen this exact problem on a 2000 Chevy Blazer, turned out to be a bad connection in the fuse box.

Turn the key to on, but don't start it. Now go to the under-hood fuse box and wiggle, or push on each of the fuses, if you hear the fuel pump turning on and off you've found a bad connection, and it can often be repaired fairly cheaply.
