HELP, trouble getting crankshaft pulley off

89 jeep cherokee laredo 4.0 150,000 i am trying to remove and replace the crankshaft pulley. when i try to loosen the bolt the pulley housing just turns. do i need to wedge the pulley, is the bolt reverse threads and will i need a pulley removal tool to get it off. trying to get this thing fixed so my mother has a car. any help would be appreciated.

The crank pulley bolt unscrews as normal. Counter-clockwise. Usually takes an impact gun to 'break' them loose. You, more than likely, will need a harmonic balancer puller tool to remove the balancer from the crank. Loren SW Washington

is there something i need to put the pulley in a bind so i can break the bolt loose

You can try a strap wrench, but you'll need a helper to hold it while you try loosening the bolt. Without an impact, it's gonna be tough. Loren SW Washington
