Hello all,

I hope you can help me, I have a real mystery on my hands. If I don't offer enough information please don't hesitate to ask me.

Well, I'll start from the begining. A month ago my wife told me she was having a terrible time filling up her 2000 Hyundai Elantra (four cylinder, 100,000 miles). She said that the gas pump kept shutting itself off like her tank was full. It took her 20 minutes to fill it up one squeeze of the handle at a time.

That takes me to three weeks ago. Her "check engine" light came on with an evaporation code. We had the code cleared at a local Auto Zone.

The next week the light went on again, she took it to the Auto Zone again and they cleared it and sold her a new gas cap.

Last week it came on again. My wife brought up the gas problem again and said she is still having the same trouble. She asked me to fill it up so I can experience it myself.

When I tried to fill it up here is what happened:

It took two gallons without any problems. Then the pump shut off like the tank was full. When I took the handle out of the tank I could hear the gas going down the pipe slowly, making a bubbling sound. I could actually hear it bubbling. The only thing I can think of is that the air in the tank is not escaping while the gas is going into the tank causing a kind of air lock.

My question to you guys is what would cause this? I took the car to two garages and neither of them had any idea what would cause it.

Thanks again for any help and if you have any questions please ask.

Frank

There is a vent on the gas tank. There is more than likely a valve there also that may be hung. If air can not get out of tank, fuel can not get in.

Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

Can this "vent" be repaired or does the whole tank have to be replaced? Is it a big job? Please give me as much info as possible.

Thanks,

Frank

the vent tubes are usually made out of molded plastic and the part is more then likely sold as an assembly with the filler neck.

you might need to drop the tank in order to attach the filler neck to the tank. it depends on the accessiblity you have under your car.

WOW - I thought I was crazy. At first I thought it was the gas station's pumps I was usign - and went elsewhere out of frstration - only to have it happen again and again. So I started asking around -- and no one has ever heard of what I am talking about. So I went on line becuase there are more no ones here to ask. (lol).

Thread after Thread decribed the problem I am having and all the Threads seem to be about SISTER vehicles. Hyundai and KIA. I own a 2003 Kia Optima - and this issue just started over the last two months. Right before it started I had what i can only describe like a dead rodent odor in my car for a week. I thought maybe something got into the fuel fill pipe, died, and was jamming my ability to simply fill and go.

Like everyone else - I have to fill, click,, fill, click, fill, click for 10 - 15 minutes. It shoots a 1/2 gall and stops -- Lots of work at $3.70 per gal.

So not it sounds like it might be some sort of VENT issue. (No engine or other lights have come 'on' with my car).

I wonder what KIA will tell me?
