I went to Firestone Tire Center and told them I needed a nail removed and plugged. They told me it is too close to the sidewall and I need a new tire. I don't think it is but of course I'm not a tire professional. Please look at the picture here:http://firebirdbandit.com/websites/firebirdbandit/images/IMG_2474.JPG

Let me know if I really need a new tire or it can be plugged. I don't want to get ripped off if I don't really need one. Thanks, Brad

Brad; Due to the possibility of viruses, see if you can post the picture here. What brand tires are on your car? You might want to check to see if you have a road hazard warranty on them. If the nail is too close to the sidewall where the tread/sidewall flexes, it would be unsafe or maybe even impossible to get a patch or a plug to seal.

Got it Loren! Site was ok. Looks to me like a typical sheet rock type screw or nail perhaps and it should be fixable! I can't say for sure as I'm not there not matter how good the pics. If tire wasn't run flat and just leaked that should - I repeat SHOULD be fixable. Best fix is to remove tire from rim and patch from inside vs a plug IMO.

Inflate this tire (a bit over pressure for a test) and if it bulges there it probably did damage it beyond reasonable fix. AGAIN - IF THIS WAS NOT RUN WHILE FLAT IT LOOKS TO ME TO BE FIXABLE. Taking if off should show signs of problems rendering it NG for fixing or not.

IMO - a fixed tire is never as good as one that never needed it to begin with. A judgment call by you and a tire place or tech.

As any tire but watch this one if fixed like a hawk,

T

Take your tire somewhere else. It should be able to be patched with no problem.

Thanks everyone for all your help. I did take it for a second opinion and they said someone good could patch the tire but he didn't have anyone onsite that was that good at the moment. I'm thinking of getting a new tire to be on the safe size because we do a lot of highway driving here in Florida. Its a Continental Tire. P235/70 R16. Below are 2 more pictures.

Subject to other opinions as always but I'd try to fix that tire the way it looks to me. You'll be much better off with a matched set by miles and looks like there's a lot more on that pair!

Glad you said Fla for its use. What can happen is the steel has been exposed now or will be from now on to water. Here the salted roads of ice melter for Winters would hasten the steel's losing it with the rubber and so could you with water and ocean salt. It can take it for a while but years is trouble. Would show up as tread separation and a lumpy feel not to be ignored in any tire.

I'd save it if at all possible,

T
