Grinding noise Sign In

Hello Everyone,
Im having an intermittent fault occur on my Fiat Grande Punto when I try to start the car. It is a grinding sound similar to that of turning the key when the engine is already running.

Its had a new starter motor and no change. Happens seemingly randomly when attempting to start. Can see no pattern to when it's happening or why.
Heres a link to youtube to give you a better idea of the sound, its not the best quality video but hopefully it will give you a rough idea.

Thank you

Re: Grinding noise Sign In

Hi - This vehicle not sold where most regulars are located but doesn't matter. This starter should be removed to inspect the "ring" gear or AKA "flywheel" which is the large gear the starter is turning and can be seen with starter removed if it takes mirrors. Look at that gear one full revolution of engine.

Two starters doing the same thing that is the likely problem. Requires removing transmission to get to it for repair - don't know if just a gear is available or the whole unit that holds it?

If found bad, worn, teeth missing, chipped off also look the the starter's gear so it doesn't happen again.

Another is that somehow the starter could be shimmed too far away from that gear. Couldn't guess what engines do or don't do that.

You said it sounds much like when you use the starter with the engine running. Hope you are not too familiar with that meaning if someone has that habit this problem will happen again,

T
