Year of Vehicle: 2004
Make/Model: Pontiac Grand Am GT
Engine: 3.4L with "Ram Air"
Mileage: 84K
None of the interior lighting (except "dome light" and glove box light) are operational. This vehicle belongs to my son's wife. As she was driving home from work one night recently, suddenly all of the interior lighting went dark. This includes lighting for the instrument cluster, floor shift selector. radio (except station and clock display), etc.. She reported that she smelled a slight "burnt" odor immediately thereafter. Another odd thing was the "Check Engine" light and the "Service Engine Soon" light both came on at the same moment and have remained so. Still another oddity is that now when the vehicle is locked with the remote, the head lamps no longer "flash". This vehicle has the "Auto-On" feature for the lighting and it still operates at least the exterior portion. The vehicle exhibits no driveability problems whatsoever. All gauges in instrument cluster function properly as does the Cruise Control, speedometer/odometer, power door locks and power windows.
We have checked all the fuses related to this lighting and found none were blown. We scanned the vehicle with a high end scann tool for the cause of the CEL but the scann tool reported no codes of any type present. This tool is capable of scanning for generic, manufacturer and ABS codes. It would seem to me that the loss of the interior lighting and all of these oddities are interrelated.
Anyone have any ideas? We have not checked any of the relays if in fact these lights are controlled by relays. Also I have heard that these vintage Grand Am's have problems with the Body Control Modules and this lighting conuld be controlled by the BCM.
Any assiatnce would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

LOL...... OK, lets correct a few misstatements here................
Ram air?????
That term didn't mean anything back in the 60s when people started claiming that. You car can have a Supercharger or a Turbocharger but "Ram Air" is a teenager's buzz word.
The next thing is your generic code reader that also pulls ABS codes is nowhere near a "high end scan tool", not even close.
You need a real professional bidirectional scan tool capable of reading Body Control Modules and more than just stored codes. I suspect you are seeing a MIL for the body control and not engine control.

Ram air option comes on the GT version from the factory. The ram air comes in through the grill slots.

I wonder how fast you have to go before the Ram air starts to take affect?
I'd be looking for burnt wiring. Inspect harnesses and connection under the dash for melting. if there is any aftermarket add-on or any wiring modifications that would be a good place to check. Follow the nose and you may find the problem.
