Hello!
1992 Ford Taurus Lx 3.8 L V6 with 75,000 miles
I just replaced the engine, taking several months to do so, making sure all gaskets are seated correctly. When I start my engine and idle, it occasionally sputters. Otherwise, it purrs like a kitten and it gets up to speed fine when I choose to drive it up and down the long driveway to my home. Not to mention it goes through all the gears with little trouble. However, when I stick it in idle and bring it up to 2,000 RPMs and hold it there for about thirty seconds the exhaust manifolds glow red hot. The exhaust grew so hot it melted the exhaust pressure sensor on the top right of the plenm. We have ruled out the converter for the exhaust system being plugged and several other obscure potential problems and have run out of ideas.
Anyone have any ideas? I go back to college three hours away on sunday so if I could get a potential fix soon I would appreciate it :]

Those sensors melt all the time. The usual cause of that type thing is a misfiring engine dumping raw fuel into the exhaust which ultimately burns.

hmmm... alright. What types of things could cause it to misfire like that?

Dozens of things. You first have to identify which cylinders and then whether it's spark, fuel or compression missing.

If the ignition timing is severely retarded, it will cause that too.
