Getting out of park	Sign In

I have a Toyota Avalon, front-wheel drive, which is parked facing down an incline. I cannot release the gear shift. How do I get it out of park?

As you know this should have a lock such that shifter won't come out of Park unless brake is pressed but I think what has happened is there is too much force on the mechanical park lock in trans which is making it difficut to remove it from park.

When on an inclind you should set parking brake to hold a car still before putting it in park but stuff happens. To avoid stressing the shifter and linkage by just pulling way too hard I suggest getting help either with some helpers pushing the vehicle up against the grade or a careful tow strap with another vehicle (tow truck would do this) to releave the force on that mechanism. Explain what happened and a good tow operator should know how to do this safely preventing car from running away on you!

I'm guessing that this is it and not a problem with the release with the brake applied because you mentioned the incline.

Know that the parking "pawl" in trans is really not meant to hold the car and use of parking brake is always suggested and I'm guilty of that all the time too but am aware of it on steep grades.

Again - forcing it could cause damage you don't need so use good judgment,
