Gas tank sabotage

So this is something I’ve never seen before and had me stumped. Thorough google search yeilded nothing. Sorry if this isn’t the correct place to ask, since it’s technically a scooter, but my question would pertain to any gasoline engine and I’m hoping someone here might know.. My friends scooter was parked for a couple of days at the local mechanic, nothing wrong with it, just being stored while she was moving. He out of the blue one day told her to move it, and when she got there, all the gas was gone. She had a different mechanic load it up and look at it and he found the fuel line disconnected. Reconnected the fuel lines and out gas in and the gas congealed. Siphoned it out, cleaned it, and then it was fine, except a gash in the fuel line. Question is, what the heck could have been put in a gas tank that would make the gas gel up like that? Thanks
