Fuel leaks from the top of the tank

Greetings, I'd appreciate it a lot if someone would like to help me, I have a Fiat Punto 1.1 from 98. Some weeks ago I had this problem with my fuel filter, it leaked, So I started replacing my fuel filter, I disconnected the negative battery terminal and replaced the fuel filter, it wen't ok. So I thought, problem fixed, but the car wouldn't start, So i've let my father look under the car to see if anything still leaks. And it did ! From the moment I turned the key, fuel started leaking from the top of my fuel tank. When I turned the key back, it stops. I can't see where exactly it comes from. The fuel pump turns on, so i don't think the problem is there. I don't think it's because of replacing the fuel filter since I noticed my fuel tank was sticky from fuel even before I replaced it. Is this enough information so that someone could diagnose what the exact problem is ? I'd like to fix it myself, if possible, since it would probably be a costly if done by a mechanic Thanks a lot in advance, Dries

It sounds like you broke either the line or the fitting at the tank and the tank will have to be removed for inspection unless you have access through the floor somewhere. We don't have that car here so i couldn't tell you. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
