Ford f250 fuel problem Sign In

I have a 1990 Ford F250 with dual tanks, the problem is that it runs great off the rear tank, but when I switch to the front tank it starts to stumble then lose power and backfires. I have owned the truck for several months and it has gotten steadily worse to the point I cannot use the front tank at all now. When I first bought the truck I noticed the front fuel pump was louder then the rear. (noticeably). I want to check all my options before I buy a new fuel pump.

Back in 90 they had a couple of different fuel delivery systems; the most common one that I’ve worked on has a low pressure supply pump in the tank along with a high pressure pump on the frame rail.
If yours is the two pump or in this application a three pump (duel tanks) system, the pump in the front tank could be weak or the screened pick up filter on the inlet of the pump could be clogged.
I haven’t found a pressure spec for the low-pressure pump(s). But you could do a volume test on both front and rear supply pumps and compare the volume’s between the two for a prescribed amount of time.
If the front tank pump only puts out half the volume lets say in 15 seconds as the rear tank pump; then at least you know your heading in the right direction to cure this problem.
If your system is the type that only has the in-tank high-pressure pump(s) then pressure test and volume test them at the schrader valve under the hood.
They both should produce 30 to 45 psi and pump 33 gallons an hour. I know your not going to run the pump for an hour but do a little math and you’ll figure out what the volume should be.
Keep it fun.
Dan.
