Ford Truck overheating

We have a 2003 Ford Ranger that heats up when turning on the heater. Have added coolent and that didn't help. Checked hoses- seem to be ok.

Engine size please. Also is it just the heater that causes the overheat or is it the defroster also?
Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

It's a 4 cylinder,stick shift. When turning on the heater it also turns on the defrost. No warm air coming out of heater, only cold.

No heat coming out of heater, yet engine heat guage shows heat increasing for 5 min. to the highest range then in returns to normal for 5 min., this cycle continues. 5 min high, then 5 min normal.

OK. First thing is to be sure all the air is out of the system. You can raise the front of truck until the coolant cap is the highest part of the system. Take the cap off and start truck and let it run. This will purge all the air from the system. Then install the cap again and see if it helps. Then feel both heater hoses that go into the body of the truck. Both hoses should be hot. If one is cold, try flushing the heater core to see if it helps. Look for the heater control valve and be sure it is opening and closing properly.
Oh, by the way, the defrost should not come on when the heat is selected. Should come out of floor only. Look all over the system to see if any vacuum hoses are broken, cracked or disconnected. There is also a blend door actuator that is a pain to get to that controls the heat flow into the cab.

Ya - I'm watching - what's new? As way2old suggested this still has an air lock. Annette - could you add coolant to the radiator in this thing? The "no heat" and "overheated when requested" suggests not enough coolant for both engine and heater core so they both fail. Getting air out would solve the immediate problem but why was it low to start with is the real problem??
Defrost on while just heat requested: Some trickles there but not all that much. If a lot, diverter doors aren't working properly but that isn't causing the engine to overheat,
