Ford Taurus '99 timing belt/chain question

I have a 99 Taurus that I bought used back in 2000. The car had 74,000 miles at the time. It has the low end V6. Supposedly the engine had blown and was replaced with one that had about 3000 miles on it (retired auto repair instructor for instructors did this sort of thing after retirement). I have about 130,000 miles on the car now. Is this an interference engine? Is it a belt or a chain? I found a post that the '98 v6 has a chain that should be good for life. I'm wondering if I should ever replace the belt/chain. thanks, -fm

This car likely has the 3Lt U code engine (by your description), which means it’ll have a timing chain. It is not an interference engine but I have seen valves become bent if the timing chain lets go during hard acceleration or very high RPM. Dan. Canadian "EH"

Thanks, how expensive are valves to replace?

Take a timing change job at about $300 plus and multiply by 4 and you should be close. Dan. Canadian "EH"

Is it correct that a chain shouldn't need to be replaced for the life of a Taurus? If not correct, when would be a suggested time? The best price I could find for a timing belt change on my ES300 (including all the stuff you replace when you go in for the timing belt, like water pump etc) was $600. Was the $300 you mentioned for just the belt work? $300 sounds good, but if you do all the other stuff it quickly goes up to being painful (600) and I tend to procrastinate on painful sometimes. Can you get by without doing all the other stuff? -fm

The $300 I quoted is an off the wall quote for a basic timing CHAIN (not a belt) replacement; if your car were here I would go through it and make up a proper quote, witch like you said will add up pretty quick. As for a timing chain lasting the life of a vehicle in most cases yes but they can and should be checked for excessive wear. Dan. Canadian "EH"
