2001 Ford Ranger: 4x4,4.0L, Auto

Truck shudders and stalls in reverse after engine is at operating temp. It does the same when transmission is manually placed in low.

is the check engine light on? if so any codes?

if you feather the gas pedal will the truck keep running?

fords are notorious with the IAC valve causing problems with stalling. try removing that and cleaning it thoroughly, doesnt cost anything and is reassurance.

There is also a possibility the torque converter is staying locked up causing the engine to die. If you know someone with a higher end scanner, look at the TCC solenoid percentage when it is pmlaced in reverse. It should read 0%. Let us know.
