Ford Gas Cap Sign In

Hi guys and gals. Im not too sure what to do about my gas cap on my 98 FORD windstar. Im sure I could go to the local shop, but would like to try to fix it myself before having to pay someone else to do so, which Im sure I will have to do anyways.

I was the last one to put gas in the vehicle about a week ago. It was very cold out (-18 C) and I filled it. the cap went on well, but now, it wont come off. It has been loosened , but now all it does is turn, it wont LIFT off. I have tried pushing to re-lock it, I have tried pulling while trying to lift it off, and it seems that the two pieces twist together. When i say two pieces, I mean the stringed part that attaches to the vehicle and the cap itself.

Did i miss-thread it when i put it back on the last time? Anyone else come across this before? Havent driven it lately, trying to conserve the gas before I cant put anymore in....still have half a tank.....

Ideas please?

Are gas caps expensive to remove and replace?

Thank you very much for your time!!!

Lovely forum you have here.

Re: Ford Gas Cap Sign In

Hi and welcome!

This might be a pest to remove. Not sure right now what's wrong with it. If it was complety off vehicle and got soaked/covered with snow and froze the ratcheting ability it should have then warming up should do. Garage best - don't be using anything electric to warm up a gas cap or flame powered anything.

The idea is they will tighten to a certain force then ratchet that it's tight as far as allowed. It should not slip or ratched when turned to remove. Iced or plain broken it needs to come off for a new one before you run out of fuel of course.

If somehow the wrong cap got used at the last gas stop it would still have to be removed now for a correct new one. This could need the help of a shop as it might need to be broken off with care. The metal part of the filler neck should be ok if the cap can be removed carefully even if cut up and tools to extract the threaded parts,

Re: Ford Gas Cap Sign In

You can purchase a new cap from most auto parts stores. You may need to break the top of the cap off then take a pair of li=ong needle nose pliers and push down and turn to the left at the same time. This should allow the old cap to0 be removed. There is just small plastic pieces that hold the two pieces together.
