Just wondering if someone could help me out. I was once told that you could use power steering fluid to replace auto transmission fluid...... is this true??? DanD Veteran / Moderator Apr 18, 2005, 4:30 AM Post #2 of 3 (2292 views) Re: Fluids Sign In Some of the older power steering systems used transmission fluid, but most of today’s vehicles all have there own specific types of fluids and they are not all the same either. If by chance you mean to replace your transmissions fluid with power steering fluid. Then the answer is a flat out NO! You should always follow what the manufacturer recommends as in what type of fluid, right from motor oils too brake fluid. For example there are so many transmission fluids, there is Dexron, Mercon, GM Dexron, Dexron II, Dexron IIE, Dexron III, Ford Type F, ATF +, ATF+2, ATF +3, ATF+4 and we won’t even go near talking about manual transmissions or all the different synthetics. I had run out of tranny fluid, but had a couple of quarts of p/s fluid on me. Thought I didn't even have enough in the transmission to go buy some more.
