Failed NY emisions test Sign In

Hello everyone,

I'm new here and excited to be part of your community.
I recently purchased my second Villager, a 2000 Mercury Villager 3.3 liter engine with 86K on the clock. It's in excellent condition n drives like a fairly new car. I purchased it from a Chevrolet dealer in NJ thinking I was safe.... I was dead wrong. The car had no CE lights on and I ran it for the required NY emissions test. It failed. According to the test it read "System Not Ready", basically need to do a drive cycle. I took it for a 20 mile drive and the CE light came on. Also, when I turn on the engine the overdrive light flashes and the cruise control doesn't work. I took it to my friends shop and he pulled out two codes: One for speed sensor and the other is for a knock sensor. I replaced the speed sensor with a genuine Ford part, but the overdrive light is still flashing when I start the car and the cruise control still doesn't work. The cruise control light comes on when I push the button, but nothing, just won't engage. Not sure what to do at this point. My dream van is turning into a nightmare.

Regards
Sam

Re: Failed NY emisions test Sign In

Sounds like the dealer reset the dtc's to sell, clearing the CE light. sounds like fraud to me. usually takes a drive cycle or few for a code to reappear. Does or did your speedometer ever act funny? Usually first clue to bad signal from speed sensor. I'm not familiar with your make model year so I'm speaking in general troubleshooting. The speedo gets its signal from the computer (tcm maybe) and computer gets signal from the speed sensor. The computer (or TCM) should control the cruise control actuator so if the cruise aint working the computer may not be getting a speed signal. Even though you changed the sensor the problem could be an open/shorted wire or simply a bad/dirty connector. Try taking connectors apart and cleaning. A northern car can get salt from winter roads in them. Maybe get lucky and get a cheap easy fix to all probs! The prob could also be a bad circut inside the ECM or TCM or even the communication wires between the two. Yea it can really suck finding that needle in a haystack! Codes dont always pop up for a prob. Oh, did your CE light come back on and give a code for the speed sensor again after the new one?

Oh and the flashing OD light points to a problem related to the Computer/TCM and/or Speed sensor. No valid speed signal, No cruise control!

Yes, I believe the dealer did reset it. Speedometer is fine. Which connectors are you referring to? I tried two different OBD2 readers after I installed the new speed sensor, one say's "pending code, speed sensor" and the other doesn't pick it up.

Re: Failed NY emisions test Sign In

By the way, is it possible I replaced the wrong speed sensor? I was told there's a "wheel speed sensor" as well. Could it be possible I replaced the wrong one? The one I replaced was in the transmission. Thanks in advance.

Sam

Re: Failed NY emisions test Sign In

Usually what I do is instead of chasing connectors on a diagram, ill start cleaning connectors at the tcm and ecm and every o5her one I can find. Be carefull with the lock tabs as the older they get the more brittle they become. The tool I use for OBDII is a bluetooth "ELM327" adapter and a phone app called "Torque". It lets you view all available sensors in real time raw readings, active and pending codes, speedo to gps speed error and LOTSA other stuff. Both App and adapter (off Amazon) cost me under $20!!! Its Sooo difficult to troubleshoot when now not hands on... will try to help though ;-)

I use the same tool, but it no longer picks up the code. I know I still have a problem, because the cruise control doesnt engage and the overdrive light still flashes. Can I buy the connectors to the speed sensor new, or is it is one big harness?

Re: Failed NY emisions test Sign In

will your code reader display ALL codes- P0999 and above?
will it display sensor data ?

Post ALL codes that are current.

Re: Failed NY emisions test Sign In

I believe it does. On my torque reader I dont recall seeing anything abnormal. Somehow the computer is not reading it.

Re: Failed NY emisions test Sign In

and that was - which sensor- OSS - and that was changed WHY?
AND you can look at the sensor data if your scan tool is capable- somehow I do not think so

Re: Failed NY emisions test Sign In

On torque, home screen / menu button / settings /manage extra pids, sensors / menu button / add predefined set (for ford!) This adds extra sensors for your ford/merc. If torque displays speed from computer the sensor and wiring to the puter are ok. Then look at tcm and communication wires/buss from tcm to ecm! The ecm is getting signal but sig is not getting to the tcm which flashes OD lite and maybe controls cruise. Just fyi but The connectors don't usually need replacing, its normally a bad/corroded pin or crimp IN the connector. Your car is now more like a house with networked computers/printers/tv's/phones. Thinking of it this way will help you find the "comm" problem and thus the Fix!

Re: Failed NY emisions test Sign In

Forgot to mention that you did change the correct speed sensor (on trans) for the cruise prob. The wheel speed sensors are for your anti skid/anti lock brakes and traction control if equipped. Those go bad your check brakes light should illuminate. :)
